False Entry in Wages and Time-Book
Commentmg that the worker concerned in tlie case had not been too scrupulous, tlie Inspector of Factories, Mr E. A. Wood, proceeded against Erederick Charles Colbert, of Napier, baker, before Mr J. Miller, S.M., in tbe- Napier Magistrate's Court for a breach of .the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act in that he made false entries in his wages and timebook. A fine of £5, with 10/- costs, was imposed. Mr Wood said that Colbert had employed a man in his bakchouse at a wage of £3 15/- a week, making him sign the wages and time-book for the award rate of £5 10/- a week. "This is a sertous breach of the Act," he said, adding that on behalf of the department he asked for a moderate penalty. The defendant, Mr C. W. Nash explfiined, had become ill, and was entitled to receive, upon an insurance pqlicy he liad taken out for such a contingency, tlie sum of £8 a week. On the strengtli of this he engaged a man at £6 a week, being forced to put him off when payment on the policy did not come through immediately. He explained tlie position to the man, Mooney, vvlio agreed to work for £3 15/- a week and to be paid the balanre accruing when the insurance tnoney was paid in a lump sum. "This is a case of wilfully making a False entry in tho wages and timebook, and that is a serious matter," mmmeuted tbe Magistrate, Mr J Miller. "I cannofc ma ko a penaltv wder £5."
