: 150 Years oi Progress

SfDlNJuy, July 8. The nature of the many events ararnged to celebrate, mainly in Sydney, Australia 's 150th anniversary next ysar, is revealed by a summary of the prjgramme which is being drawn up by the Celebrations CounciL An explanation of the work of the council was given this week by tbe Minister in charge of the celebrations, Mr Dunningkani. The Minister said that th0 fundamentals of the nation fs lii'e and progress were being kept to the front of ihe aetivities. The programme would provide for a re-enactment of historical events, including the landing of Cajitain Phillip, and for a'cavalcado of history through the eity streets in a pageaut. It would provide children and thc genoral public with many free skows. The importance of primary industries would be kept in the forefront by a special period of celebrations in couutry tdwns. Government House, tbo Htate Government, the City Council, the University, and other institutions would all carry out their offieial ,functions. Provision was beiiig made for such events as a world big-game angliug contcst, surf life-saving carnivals, Australian \band cliampionsliips, regattas, nistorical and' water pageants, Venetian carnival on Sydney Harbour, a wuek of demonstratioiis' by school children, and special histoiical l'unctions. Mr Dunningham said subsidies were being given to the Navy, Army and Air Forco,v and to countrv a.iid metropoiitan organisations. Assistance wouldbe given for the transport of children in the country, aiid for tbe general 03'ganisation of exhibitions, cpnvcntions and conferences. One speeially -consiructive evcnt would be the planting of 500,000 trees throughout the State, the largest undertaking of its kind in ihe Southern Hemisphere. Every facility would be placed by the Governmeni at the disposal of tourists. ^ . The programme had been divided into three periods: — From January ,26 to February 12; from February .14 to April 1; and from April 1 to April 25, when it would conclude m a spectacular Anzae tattoo' organised by Navy, Army and Air Foree.
