POSSESSION OF ISLAND
Canton Group is British Colony NOTE TO UNITED STATES (Received 20j 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 19. Questioned respecting the alleged statement of the offieer commanding the United States mine-sweeper Avocet that the United States does not recognise Canton Island as a British possession, Mr Eden in the House of Comraons said that the British Ambassador, on July 16 communicated to the United States Government a copy of an Order-in-Council on August 8, whereby the Canton Islands are incorporated in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony. Mr Arthur Henders.on asked: Are any steps being taken to avoid the recurrence of an unpleasant incident? Mr Eden said he would depreeate any suggestion that there had been an unpleasant incident. Mr Henderson: Has any reply been received from the United States? Mr Eden: I don't thinlc the communication requested a reply.
