SMART ENSEMBLES WORN AT HASTINGS RACES

Cheered by a glimpse of the sun after several days of raini many Hastings folk evidently decided to enjoy an outing and attend the annual raee meeting of the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club wbich was held yesterday afternoon. In sheltered sunny places at the sides of the stands it was pleasantly warm, but cool breezes blowing from the snow-covered mountains, which were a beautiful picture in the bacliground, had warned the onlookeiS that good warm suits and iur-trimmed coats were the wisest clothes to wear. Smartly-tailored coats trimmed with short fur, not too lavishly, but juot as jabots, collars or sleeve trimming have never looked more attractive than this season and though brown, navy and black remain the favourite colours, several shades of gu'eeu, brighter blue and burgundy add a touch of colour. Hats, too, have never been smart er, inostly charming little fitting berets trimmed with a luught quill, a patent leather bow or a short eye veil and the favourite materxals seem to be velvet and velour. Quite often a touch of colour was giveu with a vivid red, blue, or green handbag, gloves or searf, while beautiful fox iurs and a variety of handsome iur coats called iorth much admiration. Among those who were noticcd on the lawns were the Master, Mr Thornley Sherratt and Mrs Sherratt, the latter wearing, a grey tailored costume pin-striped with white, a navy ligured , silk blouse, navy hat and squirrel luis. Tliey were accompanied by their daughters", Mrs Eorbes McHardy, \Gio wore a black bouccle >oat with wido patent leather belt and caracul sleeve trimming and a smart black velvet toque, and Miss M. Sherratt ( whose frock of cocoa afghalaine had a jabot effect embroidered with white angora spots. Slie wore a little browu hat with stitched brim turned up aJl nmnd and a stone marten stole. The president of the club, the Hon. H. A. Russell, was pi'qsent with his daughters, the Misses Molly and Sally iiusseJl. Miss Molly Russell's sint was of deep blue diagonally striped knobbJe tweed worn with a hat in the same shade aud stone marten furs. lYIiss Sally Russell wore a navy tlecked tweed suit with a pale pink line wooJ juniper and navy hat. Bouslield, deep liiue green ensemblo with three-quartcr ooat and frock and a hat in the same shade; Mrs H. Hassall, brown and fawn checked costume, with a fur stole and brown hat; Mrs Eric Nelson, brown afghalaine ensemble with - a brown aud white spotted silk scarf and brown slouch beret. Mrs A. F. Harris, brown tunic ensembld" with a hro>vn hat turned up in front; Mrs D. Holden, fawn tailored costume with a smart brown hat and fox fur; Mrs J. Wedd, musquash coat worn over a navy blue ensemble and a blue hat. Visitors from other parts who were at, the races included Mrs Alan MacDonald (Palmerston North), who wero a Russian marmot coat over a brown suit and brown hat; Miss Judy ITutIedge (Gisborne), deep brown marmot coat worn over navy blue aud a i*.uvy toque; Miss Paddy Burke (Gisborne), brown tailored suit worn with a lemon jumper and brown beret; Miss Pat YVelJwood (Christchurch), blue fur-c.ol-lared coat with a mustard shaded hat, Miss Joyce Galpin (Marton), brown tweed0 suit tlecked with cherry, a clicrry cire satin blouse and brown hat; Miss Rutherford (Christchurch/, blue flecked tweed suit, pale blue ; blouse and blue hat.
