Narrow Escape of Licensees' Family

INVEECAEGILL, Last Night. The Eailway Hotel at Otautau was destroyed by a lire which broke out at 2.30 this morning. It was a wooden building over fifty years old and contained 17 rooms. The fire started in the kitchen aud sprcad rapidly. The proprietor, Mr. K. McKcnzie, and his wife were awakened by the noise and found the passages full of smoke. With their children they were able to escape clad only in their night attire and by the time others had been sumuioned nothing could be done to save the building. Helpers were suecessfui, however, in conlining the blaze to one building. The bulk store and stable ivere saved and the bulk stock also femoved to safety by a band of work51'S. - -
