Two Men Fall Into Clutha River

DUNEDIN, Last Niglit. A fatality occurred about 1.15 p.m. to-day at the coastyuetiou works of the Lowburn Ferry bridge, Oentral Otago, when two of the empioyees fell off the staging of a temporary structure into the Ulutha river and wero drowned. They were: — Iieglie Lidclicoat, aged ahout 27, married, ; Donald McElb®1111^ aged about 28, married, In coinpany with several others the ttvo men were working about 80 feet out ou the staging at a height of sonie seven feet above the river. When ,the aecident happened a large beam was :,eing shifted by i'our mcn, the two dev.cased being on the farther end. The beam fell and the impact knockcd thcm into the water. Both men could swim and struek out for the bank, | but when they were only a few feet from safcty they both disappeared. Another of the worlimen seeing a hat floating on the surface of the river dived in an endeavour to loeate the missing men but was unsueeessful, tle current at that spot being fairly swift, Despite dragging operatio'ns from the ; sidea of the river the bodies had not j been recovergd to-night. j Mr. Liddicoat was a resident of Bip- j ponvale, Cromwell, and Mr. McElhenny j belpnged to Oamaru. j
