RACING AT WAIPAWA

Labour Day Not Available Secently tn« Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. W. Parry, notified the Waipawa County Racing Club that he could not see his way clear to issue a permit for the club to hold its annnal race meeting at Hastings on Monday, ■Octobcr 25 (Labour Day). Following . this notification, a deputa.tion interviewed the Minister yesterday •and placed the position before him. It was pointed out that in 1935 the club .entered into an agreement with t.h« Hawke's Bay Jockey Club to race on the latter's course and divide thd profits. As a result of two meetings •held under that agreement, the Waipawa Club had been able to clear up jits liabilities to the bank, but before ;raping could be resumed on the locai ! •course, extensive improvementa would •ueed to be carried out. The Minister said he had received jvery strong objectiona from both Hastings and Napier against races being held in the district on Labout Day and, ln view of that, he could not issue a permit. He suggested, however, that, if a date could be arranged for a Saturfiay following Labour Day, the matter could be re-opened. The dUputatxon, who were introduced by the member for the district, Mr. H. M. Christie, thanked the Minister for his consideration.
