BALANCE-SHEET "TAG"

No Fault oi the Council POST-QUAKE BOROUGH SURVEY "Tliere is no authority by law for the council to expend the sum of £901 and cominifc itself and future councils to an annual payment of £125 for the repayment of this amOUnt,'' states the Audit Department in the only "tag" to the Hastings Borough Council'B bal-ance-sheet for the year just ended. The. Mayor, Mr ti. A. Maddison, explained to the council last evening that this amount was the cost of the survey made of the borough as the result of the alteration of the levels following on the earthquake. "It is actually no fault of the counci). that this amount was incurred, for it Was done by arrangemcnt with the Government," he Said. "It was agreed that the £901 should be paid in yearly instalments so that if the council has broken the law the Government has done. so too. "There is no reason to fear that the 'tag' offers any reflection upon the council or its officers," he added. "In reality the balance-sheet has been returned as a 'clean sheet,' and I take this opportunity of congratulating the Town Clerk, Mr Noel G. Harding, as head of the borou&h administrative staff, upon the performance and upon the very fine service that has been given this borough."
