EARTHQUAKE LOAN
Council't Difficulty WILL DEMAND BE HELD OVER' "I hope and believe that the Government will xealise the importance of this matter as far as it concerned this council and that at least the demand will be held over for one year," said the Mayor, Mr ti. A. MAddiaon, at tho meeting of the Hastings Borough Couiicil last evening when Teferring to the conference with the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. ti. Sullivan, regarding the request of the Treasury for the interest and principal on the earthquake loaa of £11,000. "Of course, I do not know what the outcome will be of our representations," he added, "but we might be placed in a very difficult position. It is still possible for tho Hospital Board, which also has to pay interest on a similar loan, to increase its proposed levy, which we have made provdsion for in striking our rates. The Rivors Board and ourselves cannot make provision for such payment now. We have struck our rate and we have no authority by whicli we can alter it."
