Cook, ha,s supplied the appended comments of English judges on lambs and wethers entexed in thre© classes at the last Waipukurau show. It will be noted that the placings of the judges— Messrs F. Deneson (of E. G. Mears) and S. Finter (of W. Weddel and Co.) — do not altogether coincide with the awards made at the show, which were as follows : — ClasB 5 Three fat wethers, lainbed since July 1, 1935, and in the judges' opinion not to exceed 641b. in weight: Pen No 55, Morrison Bros. 1; Pen No 62, A. W. Parsons, 2 ; Pen No 52, Est. G. Y. Lethbridge, 3Class 9— Three fat freezing lambs, woolly, and breed, most suitable for the Home market : Pen No 90, F. R. MoWilliam, 1; Pen No 101, J. S. McLeod, 2 ; Pen No 91, F. Hewitt, 3. Class lO— Three fat freezing iambs, any breed, most siutable for the English market, not to exceed 421b in weight : Pe^ No i06, F. Ormond, 1 ; Pen No 111, J. J. Harwood, 2; Pen No 108, Titoki Station, 3. English Judges' Comment Following are the placings and comments received through Messrs Henry S. Fitter and Sons: — "The exhibits in the lamb class were rather dissappointing, being of poor
quality and not sufficiently finished for show carcases. The wethers, however, were an improvement on last season's, being of very useful quality, good make and. shape and not too fat. The dressing and general appearance of both these classes was quite satisfactory. ' Class 5 — Pen No 61, H. S. Rathbone (lst) ; Three very well bred sheep, full of meat and not too fat, and in our opinion the best suited for the London trade. Pen No 62, A. W. Parsons (2nd) : Three fine meaty sheep, not too fat, but rather heavy for the trade. Pen No 55, Morrison Bros. (3rd) : Three very nice sheep, full of meat and not too fat. Pen No 52, Est. G. Y. Lethbridge : Fair quality not quite finished, one slightly colourea. Pen No 53, Est, G. Y. Lethbridge : Useful sheep, tyro not, quite finished on legs. Class 9 — "An excellent show of lambs, good quality, shap© and make, but showing signs of losing that youthful bone we expect to see 1 in early spring lambs.'' Pen No 88, Est. W. Wilson (lst): These were three excellent lambs, good shape and make and a very useful size, and quite suitable for the London trade. Pen No 100, J. ! McLeay (2nd) : Of this pen there were ! two excellent lambs which were rather j too heavy for ihe London Market, but j good shape and make. The third was ! rather weak on the loin, and not such a good shape as the other two. Pen No 92, F, Ormond (3rd) : Three very good but lieavy lambs, splendid shape and full of meat. Had these been smaller in weight they would have taken first prize. Pen No 91, F. Hewitt (highly commended) : In this pen, although the Weight was most suitable for the London butcher, there was a very apparent j weakness on the back of one lamb, I which ruled the pen out for a prize. Class No 10.— Pen No 106, F. Ormond (lst) : Three very well bred lambs, full of meat and nofc too fat. Short legs, thick shoulders and good backs, and in our opinion .the most suitable for the London trade. Pen No 105, F. Hewitt (2nd) : Three very well shaped lambs, one inclined to be slightly coloured. Pen No 111, J. J. Harwood (3rd) : Well bred meaty lambs, but not quite finished. Pen No 109, J. Wilson (4th): Well bred lambs, but not quite finished. Pen No 102, J. McLeay: Well bred lambs, but not quite finished on the legs and shoulders. Pen No 103, Est. W. Wilson: Well bred, but slight of meat on the-.backs. Pen No 115, J. S. McLeod: Useful, but not quite finished. Pen No 108, Titoki Station: Rather plain and unfinished on legs. Pen No 112, A. S. Wilder-. Two fair lambs, one coloured, plain and unfinished. -Pen No 113, A. S. Wilder: Slight of meat. Pen No 114, A. W. Parsons: Very nice neaty lambs, not too fat.
