SCHOONER WRECKED

Makoa Askore in Phoenix Group NO LIVES LOST APIA, June 20. auxiliary schooner Makoa owned by the Burns Philp Company is a tota. wreck at Hull Island in tho Phoenix group. No lives were lost. The crew and labour are all ashore and well with sufncient food and water. The Makoa has been overdue for approximately three weeks and the Burns Philp Company through its agent, the Union Steam Ship Company, asked the Monowai which left Suva last Friday to call at Hull Island and report. To-day the following message was roceived from the'master of the Monowai: "Makoa a total wreelc at Hull Island. No lives lost." This message was passed on to H.M.S. Wellington en route from tho Union group to Apia and tho commander then despatclied the followmg message to the master of tho Monowai: "Please state on what part of Hull Island the Makoa is wrecked; what assistauce you rendered and if any more is required. What is the probable period the Makoa 's crew can live on their present stores and water?" The master of the Monowai replied: ' ' Makoa wrecked at a settlement on the north-west coast. The vessel is a total loss, only the ribs remaining. The crew will probably have plenty of stores as Burns Philp have a copra plantation there. ' ' The Makoa was apparently lafiding stores or loading copra when she was wrecked. The crow did not want any assistance or store3 from me. so apparently they are well supplied. They told ' uie they expected a warship xn a few days. All are well." The Burns Philp Company has sincc arranged with the Union Company for the Niagara passing Hull Island southbound to-morrow to pick up the crew and take them to Suva. Tho Makoa had just completed a thorough and extehSive overhaul at Apia and Suva ancl this. was her first trip out 'siace then.
