SOVIET FLIGHT
Reports of Oil Failure Denied NEW YOIJK, June 20. The Russian fliers announced that Vancouver would be oflicially considered the end of the fiight and ths instruments would be sealed there. The abrupt ena of the aerial dash was witnessed by only a few soldiors becausa of the general belief that the fliers would land at Portland (Oregon) where 100 persons including journalists and iphotographers waited hopefully. • Chakalov emerged first from tho 'cabin after remaining at the controia jfor the entire journey. Peering from ireddened eyes, he took a few uncertain steps then lighted a cigarette. He w,as greeted by a student from the University of Washington, who spoke Russian and acted as interpreter. While gulping a glass of water •Chakalov denied widespread reports that the landing was due to a broken oil line. The crew were reluctant to discuss the trip before the arrival of M. Troyanovsky. Crowds gathered magieally, cheered the fliers and slapped them on the back but they paid little heed. They hurriedly motored to the ct)mmandant 's house where they had ibreakfast and sipped cognac before retiring to bed. It is disclosed that tho drinking water froze over the Pole, and the crew were forced to suck ice. The pilot insisted that the single motor functioned perfectly throughout the fiight. j
