SPRINGBOK TOUR
Team for Saturday's Game with N.S W. SYDNEY, June 17. The Springboks, who were delighted to reach Sydney to-day, were tendered a reception by various sporting bodies. They paid a call on the Governor, Lorl Wakehurst. To-night they were officially welcomed by the New South Wales Eugby Union and the gathering was most convivial. The team is greatly impressed with the Sydney Cricket Ground where the players iudulged in solid training for Saturday's match against New South Wales. A feature of the training was the brilliant goal-kicking of the fullback, Brand. who drop-kicked goals from half-way. • Among the 29 members are huge iron-jawed men with cauliflower ears and other scars earned in innumerable battles on tihe Eugby field and freshf aced youths, wide-eyed with interest at visiting a new country. All have an ontlook similar to the Australians. They speak Afrikaander among themselves and invariably use it on the field. Ferdie Bergh, known as the human tank, is the biggest, 6ft. 3in. in height and weigihing 17 stone. One of the handsomest in the team is George Vau Eeenen who is also the tallest. touching 6t't. 4$ins. Ben Dutoit and Harry Martin are about the shyest. Craven and Villiers are the strange contrasts for half-backs. Craven weighs 14 stone and Villiers 9 stone. The skipper, Philip Nel, has a difficult taslc in getting the team fit for the first test, as not one of the games already played has been of much assistance and all the games so far have been on wet grounds. A number of players are sufferin-g from colds contracted last Tuesday when they visited the Jenolan Caves where the weather was bitterly cold. The Springbok side for Saturday is: Brand, Turner, Bestep, Hofmeyr, Broodrijk, Vyver, Craven, M. Louw, Lotz, S. Louw, P. Nel (captain), Dutoit, Vandenherg, Watt and van Eeenen. The New South Wales team is: Fullback, Eankin; three-quarters, Kelaher, Towers, Pauling, O'Brien; five-eighth, Eichards; half, McShane; forwards, Hodgson, Kelly, Windon, E. Hutchinson, Eamsay, Cerutti, Stone, Malone. The Springboks' manager has chosen Mr. E. V. Mayne as referee.
