Maraetotara—Waimarama
The June meeting of the Maraetot-ara-Waimarama Womien's Institute was held at Mrs Long's home, Mrs Elliott presiding over a good attendance of members and two '.visitors.' The meeting opened with the aspiration, after which a vote of sympathy was passed. to the relatives of Lola Steenson, all members standing in silence. A new member, Mrs Boese, was proposed. The roll call, "Hints on washing woollies" brougfht forth varied answers. The members were then entertained with a debate, "Is the modern girl superior to her sister of 30 years ago?" JMrs Elliott and Miss M. Gillies took the affirmative side, and Miss Chambers and Miss Gilray the negative. Both sides put forward convincing arguments, but the' vote went to the affirmative. The first competition, a piece of quilting, was won by Miss 1). Long, Mrs Thom being second. The other competition, guessingj the names of motor-cars, was won by Mrs Gillies, Mesdames Gilray and Kina being equal second. Mrs Robson and^ Miss Long provided a tempting afternoon tea, and the afternoon closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
