LEGISLATOR RESIGNS
Last Survivor of Samoan Kings APIA, June 13. A deveJopment during the fono of faipules has been the resignation from the Samoan Legislative Council of the Hon. Malietoa. The Hon. F. Langstone, when here, announced that fqur seats in the Leg>islative Council would be available for Samoans and a discussion has occurred as to whether the Hon. Malietoa. a sitting member by appointment of the Governor-General, should relinquish his §eat so that the four seats could be open for the expression of the opinions of Samoans. In answer to representations from the faipules, the Hon. Malietoa finally announced he would resign. The faipules thereupon intimated tliat if the Administration would increase his stipend by addirig the honorarium paid to members not in receipt of an official salary, they would re-elect him to the Council. The Hon. Malietoa replied that 'his resignation was definite and to select someone else. The Hon. Malietoa Tanumabili, O.B.E., is now 56 years of age. He was proclaimed King of these islands in 1899, but voluntarily gave up the honour in 1900 when Western Samoa was taken over by Germany. He is the last survivor of the Kings of Samoa.
