NO INCREASE IN RATES FOR YEAR

WAIPAWA, Tfiis Day. Tfie montfily meeting of tfie Waipawa Borougfi Council was field last evening, tfie Mayor, Mr C. G. E. Harker, presidiing over Crs. F. Eagle, H. T. Limbrick, F. R. Furminger, J. ,E. Barker, E. MacGregor, and W. M. Murray. The town clerk (Mr B. O. Gamby) and tfie borougfi overseer (Mr R. Petfierick) were also in attendance. Tfie pay-sfieet, totalling £940 8/6, was passed for payment. Central H.B. Rugby Sub-Union wrote expressing appreeiation -"of tfie consideration extended, and advising that a due allowance of representativo games would be made to Waipawa.— Recedved. ■ ' Central H.B. Electrie Power Board advised a reduction in ligfiting charges, excluding tfie ffieatre, provided payment for eurrent is made on due date. — Received. Waipawa R.S.A. wrote expressing regret tfiat the band sfiould fiave found it necessary to cease to function, and urging reconstruction as soon as possible. — Held over for discussion with general business. Commissioner of Transport wrote notifying tfiat tfie following streets would be exempt from tfie 30 m.p.fi. restriction: — At nortfi end of borougfi, 1J mile; from traffic .bridge to witfiin five cfiains of Rose street; portions of tfie Waipawa-Pourerere and WaipawaPatangata madn fiigfiways;_ and also portions of Tamumu road, Bibby street and Johnston streets. — Adopted. Tfie Mayor said he thougfit it necessary to do'the repapering work witfiout delay. Tfie Town Clerk drew uttention to tfie necessity of providing proper efiow facilities for the gas appliances. Cr. Eagle said tfie council sfiould make some proper provision, and he felt sure any expense incurred would be warranted and would be a success. The Mayor suggested that it migfit be possible to organise a proper saies campaign witfi a view to increasing gas saies. On tfie motion of the Mayor/ it was dccided tfiat sucfi a scheme should be formnlated by tfie gas committee. Tfie Town Clerk suggested that & scale of terms for all appliances bo drawn up. Tfie Mayor said tfiat tbo finance committee fiad, after meeting and considering tfie matter, secured the .servuces of Mr Webb. of Webb's Nurseries, to draw up a scheme of planting on tfie site of the Nellie Jull Park. Mr Webb fiad met tfie committee on tfie site and 1

had recommended tfiat shrubs be" planted on tfie nortfiern bank/ witfi a cedar on eacfi side. of tfie' steps at Waverley street. In tfie large plot on tfie rigfit-fiand side a copper beech to be planted and shrubs on the western boundary. Shrubs would also be' planted in tfie oeparate beds and on tfie extra area donated by Mr Jull. Purchase of tfie necessary trees and shrubs was authorised. Cr Eagle asked tfiat tfie top portion of Mathews street be attended to and the overseer was instructed to attend to tfiis. Overseer 's Report The Overseer reported as follows: — Concrete pipe culverts fiave been laid in Bibby and McGreevy streets and silt boxes made in Bibby and Victoria Streets. The culvert in Ruataniwha" road has been extended, and a silt box installed. THe footpath on the west side of Melville street has been coated with red metal in preparation for tarring. Mr B. lreland has delivered 116 yards and the borough lorry, 52 yards of-pit metal -to Bibby street, 12 yards to Melville street and four yards to Rose street. Twenty five yards of •' metal have been carted to Melville street for tlie concrete water channel. The floor of the outside conveniences at the Town Hall has been concreted and an automatic flush is to be installed. Water tables in Bibby and Melville streets have been cleaned, and the usual carting of rubbish and road grading have been done. The electric and gas plants are in good order. Three water ineters have been installed, two at the district Higb School .and one at the saw-mill.. The gas manager reported: — The gas made during the mohth of May was 352,600 c.ft. as against 362,800 c.ft., a decrease of 10,200 c.ft on the corresponding month last year. , Coal carfbonised, 26 tons 19cwts. lqr. Average make of gas, 13,079 c.ft. per ton. During tfie montfi 67 tons of coal were received at the gasworks, and one gas fir© and one coolcer were installed. Attending to Memorial grounds and consumers fittings with the usual work at the gasworks was the work done for the month
