Liliums are. among the most majjestb 0f fiowering bulbs. They belong to » svjdely disti'ibuted family from Europe, A.sia and America. Lilies grow abundntxtly under widely different conditions. In Japan they grow wild On the sides of wooded hills and pockets of soil and Btone. There is no doubt that they succeed best if groWn in partial shade or cool atmosphCre, but do not require to be set directly under trees nor in total shade. A hot, dry corner, or a cold, wet, heavy soil are unsuitable. May, June and July are the best months for planting the bulbs, which should be set one foot apart and three inches deep. The following well-known varieties do well planted among beds Of rhododendrons or azaleas and other dwarf evergreen scrubs: — Lilium auratum, L. Speciosum, L. Elegans, L. Regale, L. Sulphurium, L. Longifolium. ,
