MADONNA OR XMAS, LILIES
Among the most popular of this class of bulbous plants is Lilium candidum, commonly termed the Madonna Lily. In many parts of th© country this bulb grows with remarkable fro> dom and seldom fails to please.
They'suoceed in either heavy or light soil providing ther© is sufficient drainage. Bulbs should be set from May until July, the earlier they are planted after lifting 'the better, becaus© the bqlbs sopn shrivel if kept out of the soil for long. Select a well-draiued and isiinny spot for planting, trench the soil and dig in a layer oi well-rotte^ manure, stable. Plant the bulbs I foot apart and 3in
deep, mxxxng a Uttle sand with the soil beneath the bulbs. It is important that no manure comes in actual contact with tbe bulbs at any period, also earlj planting meaus early root growtb and less likelibood of failure.
