Protected Game Must Not Be Shojt CASE AT WAIPUKURAU

(From

WAIPUKURAU, This Day. A warning that action would be taken against anyone shooting pukeko or any other game pfotected by law whs givenu dn the Waipukurau Maglstrate 's Court this morning by tho Hawke's Bay Acclimatisation Society ranger. He proceeded against George Mangine Winlove,- builder, for shooting two pukekos during the close.season. The Magistrate, Mr. J. Miller, entered a conviction and dmposed a fine of £3 and costs. The Acclimatisation Society ranger heard two shots while on duty near Waipukurau on April 11, said Mr. G. B. Amyes, of Napier, appearing for the society. The ranger met the defendant and, on looking in his bag, found two dead pukekos. "There is quite a lot of this sort of thing going on, and the society has brought the matter to my notice," said the ranger, John Ernest Smith. "We are not asking for .a heavy penalty, but we want the publie to know that no protected game must be shot." Winlove:. The ^pukeko were plentiful where I was, shooting. The Magistrate: That is no excuse. In this case I won't make the fine a heavy one, but you must take warning that this kind of game is protected at present and must not be shot. Proceedings were also taken by the society against five people who, while duck-shooting, used more than 15 artifieial decoys, contrary to tho Animals Protection and Game Act. Because he believed the offenders had acted in innocence of the law on the subjeet,'the Magistrate imposed no fine, but ordered each man to pay costs. The defendants were: — George William May, Takapau; Ray Abercombie Pearson, Takapau; HaTry Hammond, Waipukurau; Gregory Burgess, Waipukurau ; and Benjamin David Paterson, Hatuma. 6
