TRAFFIC OFFENCES
Two Cases First of Kind in District A heavy list of traffic offences came before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in the Hastings Magistrate 's Court this morning, two of the cases being the first of their kind brought in this district. For operating a car without a warrant of fitness, George Stewart was fined 10/- with costs. The case was' the first of its kind in this district, said Traffic-Officer D. Mann, but defendant had made no attempt to get a warrant. Under the new reguiation Gordon Walker and Co. Ltd. were convicted and discharged for operating a heavytraffic vehicle with less than 18 per cent. of the total load on the steering axle. Mr. Manu said. that the reguiation had been designed to give greater safety'in steering. At one stage defendant 's wheels had risen iiine inehes from the ground. This was the first prosecution of this nature in the district. Defendant pleaded 'that he was unaware of the reguiation, For operating a motor-truck not fitted with a mirror to give a view of traffic at the rear, Albert Hampton.was fined 10/-, with costs 10/-. Reginald Ernest Frederick Miles was fined £1 10/-, with costs 10/-, for operating a heavy motor vehicle with a load greater than that it was licensed to carry. Mr. J. H. R. Semple, Main Highways Board inspector, said the vehicle was overloaded by 18ewt. When he approached the defendant he refused to drive on to the load metre and had to be forced to do so. Pleading guilty to driving a heavy traffic motor vehicle without a heavy traffic licence, Ah Wing was fined £1 10/-, with costs 10/-. Douglas Ernest Brinson was charged with operating a motor-cycle without a warning device in Heretaunga street. The cycle was examined while stationary by Mr. Mann, but defendant had Ignored all communications about the matter. Defendant was ordered to pay Court costs of 10/-. Henry Edwards, who pleaded guilty to riding a cycle at night without a light, was fined 15/-, with costs 10/-. For riding cycles on the footpath, James William Bon,e' and Colin Tong were each fined 10/- apd costs 10/-. For allowing cattle to stray upoh the : road, John O'Conaor pleaded guilty and was fined 5/- with costs 10/-. William ' O 'Neill was fined 10/- and costs 10/- i for allowing a horse to wander on to the road about midnight. ,
