Play Area for Children; Bitumen Roading OOUNCIL'S DIFFICULTY That the necessary work should be done at the Willowpark road reserve to ettable it to be used as a sports and children's play area. This. was one of the requests niade to the . Hastings Borough Council last nigjht by residents of Hastings street. Consideration. is to be given the niatter when the council has its esfimates for the year under review. The residents asked that Hastings street should be bituminised from Southampton' street to Pattison street, And also French street and Willowpark road south from Elm road to the Willowpark reserve. A similar request for bituminisation was received- from residents of Elm road. All the matters were deferred for consideration. with the estimates. Speaking in regard to the Elm road request, the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison said that there was 16 chains of roadway that would have to be done and that this would cost about £360. Tho revenue, in the way of rateSj from this street amounted to £37. "I mention these figures merely to show the economic clifficnlties that the council has to face in these matters," he said. "Here we have a big number of requests from ratepayers for works of a capital nature, and it is very difficult to meet all those requests for, though it is the policy of the council to carry out permanent work as progressively as it is possible, it can only he done in the light of its finances and the needs of constructional work in the borough.''
