Shanghai Has Population of 3,800,000

SHANGHAI, April 20. Latest population figures for the combined areas of Shanghai give a total population of 3,808,765 and accord Shanghai undisputed sixth place in world population rankings for leading cities, according to announcement by the Police Bureau of the City Government of Greater Shanghai — or the Chinese municipality. This iigure represents an increase of 264,309 over the figure given for tha end of 1935. Foreign population at the end of the year just passed was 67,814, or an increase of 12,444 over the 1935 figure. It is probable that the large increase ie chiefly due to influx of White Russias ffom Harbin. The only city of the Far East which is larger than Shanghai is Tokio which, according to generally accepted -figures, has a population of 5.311,000 and Tanks as third largest city in the world, behind New York and Loudon.
