Central Hawke's Bay Rugby ASSISTANCE GIVEN

WAIPUKURAU, This Day. Recognition of the good services r^ndered to young men and boys by _the Central Hawke's Ba^ Rugby Football Sub-Union was given by the Waipukurau Borough Council last evening when it agreed to donate £10 to the subunion to assist it during a period oi finaneial hardship. The council received a deputation which pointed out thatv its work of providing good, healtliy recreation for young men and boys was being handicapped because of lack oi funds. . "We pay £12 a year in rates for Central Park (Waipukurau), and m asking for finaneial assistance I would point out that the sub-union has to father the boys from the time they leave school," said the chairman of the sub-union, Mr A. L. McCormick. "Over the past four years and more we have shown a loss on the year's working. Central Park (controlled by the subunion) is a necessity for football, and if we did not have the' use of it we could not accominodate everybody on Russell Park. We support the poorer members of the ,community and would ask you to bear this in mind when listening to our request for help." The secretary of the sub-union, Mr C. M. Williamson, supported Mr McCormick, adding that Rugby broughi additional people to Waipukurau which was good for the town. Rugby players themselves were not in a position to spend money on their sport, as was the case with players of most other sports. "It is a manly, healthy sport," he said, "and plays an important part in the moulding of character. We are not here crying a poor mouth. We are trying to help ourselves and are running a queen carnival to raise funds." Cr. J. McCarthy congratulated the deputation on the able manner in which it had presented its case. After the deputation had retired, the Mayor, Mr 1. W. Mackie, said that in Yiew.of all the sub-union was doing for the young people of the community the council mi^ht well give same assistance. • A decision to make a donation of £10 was reached on the motion of Cr. - J. L. Brathwaite, seconded by Cr. J . McCarthy.
