TAX INCIDENCE

"Not Fully Understood Even By M.P.'s" COMMENT BY CHAMBER "I don't think that the incidence ot taxation is fully understood even_ by members of Parliament, and certainly not by the average man in the street." said Mr H. AV. C, Baird, president of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, at a meeting of the Chamber last night, when a letter was received from the Associated Chamber of Commerce asking for an expression of opinion on the question of taxation in view of the announced intention of the Government tp review the metkod of taxation. Mr A. C. A. Hyde: What is wanted is a curtailment of expenses. They are going on with all these big sehemes, which are onJy adding to the annual costs. Mr Baird: They'll know all about it next year when it comes to colleeting the income-tax. Mr Hyde, who is cliairman of a subcommittee appointed .to consider this matter, said that when the request was made some time ago the committee had considered it and felt that the various points which should receive attention had been, and were already, dealt with in other cliannels, and that there was really nothing fresh to suggest. "The Associated .Qhambers, in one way or another, have made and received many suggestions, eriticism and comments," he said, "and I don't thmk that there-is anything to be said that will break fresh ground." "You know that you ean't stress some points too often," said Mr Baird. He thought it was advisable for the Chamber to consider the various aspects and confirm the already expressed opinions and decisions so that the Associated Chambers would be satisfied that they were fully conversant with the views of the Hastings Chamber. It was eventually agreed that the matter of providing a report and reply to the letter should be left to Mr Hyde and his committee.
