Napier Mayor Wears Hastings Mayoral Chain THE BOND OF FRIENDSHIP A remarkable gesture of goodwill Ivetween chief citizens of two towna was made by the Mayor of Hastings, Mr. Gr. A. Maddison, at the Coronation and Borough Jubilee dinner in Hastings last evening when, after urging ths'it the people of Hastings and Napier and the surrounding districts should strive to their utmost ability to build what he termed a "Greater Hawke's Bay, ' ' he transferred the mayoral chain from his own sboulders to those of Mr. C. O. Morse, Mayor of Napier. At tho same timo he expressed the hope that Napier would have its own mayoral chain in due course. Impressed by this gesture, Mr. Morse expressed his deep appreciation. "It is indeed a wpnderful gesture of friendliness, and I appreciate it very deeply, ' ' he said. "I assu're you that It will be my very earnest endeavour fo cement the bond of friendship between two such irnportant towns." Eegarding a mayoral chain for Na- 1 pier, Mr. Morse said that at present the town did not possess such a worthy emblem of offiee, but he had hopes that with the assistance of the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Et. Kev. F. A, Bennett, in the designing of one, it would be possible to secnre a chain that would be appropriately made out of paua shells, which, as was generally well known, played so irnportant a purt in the history of this district.
