RALPH EWART

BARLEY.

(To the Editor). ^ Sir, — Iu a final answer to our cautious friend Mr. "Ratepayer" I am delighted to knoiv we hold at' least something in common, He is entirely wrong, however, when he surmises that my approaeh to the question is from the political aspect. I lift it to a higher groqnd than either the flhancial or the political — my viewpoint on all these great questions is the human outlook. Mr. "Ratepayer" may have acliieved his present position of comfort in t]ie midst of a system of equities. While ihe has done so there are thouSands who have toiled just as strenuously and today are in the cauldron of want through the inner workings of our present system, i.e., the survival of the fattest rather than the fittest. I am out to welcome a system which not only allows a man to say, "What I hold I keep," but also allows every useful man to sit in the same sense of security that he shall enjoy all the amenities of life (champagne if you like) as a sure result of his useful quota of service to the community. When the toileis of a country shall enter into all the coniforts that their efforts for the community have meritedj when the few shall not ascend to opulence at the expense pf the many. This is not the jingle of political platforms, but the great human teaching that can and should emanate from the teneta of the greatpst teacher who said "Do unto othera as ye would," etc. This, Mr. Editor, is the reason and this alone that I welcome the advent of an opportunity for the wprkers to change from drab surroundings to all the comforts and conveniences that the State can pffer. This alon'e is true progress. Thanking you for the space you have afforded. — Yours. etc..

Hastings, May 9/37.
