WORK DONE IN PATANGATA COUNTY
(From
WAXlr UKUKAU, This Day. Road repair work in various parts of Central Hawke's Bay is being carried out at present. The progress made in this respect by the" Patangata County Council was the subject of comment by the engineer, Mr. J. C. McLauchlan, at yesterday's meeting of the council. "Portions of Cook's Tooth road, in the Porangahau riding, require a light coat of metal, as the clay has drifted over the metal and the surface is very slippery when wet,' 'he said. "This will receive attention as soon as the two Bedford lorries are available for the work." Surfacemen have been widening the bad corners at Renall's cutting on the Mangaorapa roads; Wanstead Hill, in the Eparaima riding, is being widened and the work is progressing satisfactorily; slips are being cleared away on Hunter 's road; if approval is forthcoming, bitumen work will be carried out in the Patangata riding from the racecourse corner to beyond the old river-bed; a better surface is anticipated when light metal work on the main highway in the Oero riding between the top of the Patangata hill and Elsthorpe is comjUeted; St. Lawrence road, in the same riding, is being overhauled; slips on Gibraltar road at Pourerere have been removed; a start has been made with the lay-out of the MangatarataLong Range road via the easement route. This work will take a considerable time. Yesterday's meeting was attehded by Messrs. C. Pattison (chairman), j, D. Ormond, jnr., H. Parsons, A. McGaffin, B. E. O. Nilsson, A. W. S. Longley, the clerk, Mr. J. W. Elliott, and the engineer, Mr. J. C. McLauchlan.
