Waipukurau Retailers Discuss Question
From
WAIPUKURAU, This Day. The meeting of retailers called for last night by the Waipukurau Charnber of Commerce to discuss the question df street decorations during Coronation week, was poorly attended. The president, Mr J- Wharmby was in the chair. The secretary^ Mr fi'. G. Dunn, explained that the meeting had had to be called hurriedly', and this was probably the reason for tbe poor attendanoe. At the Diesident'8 request, the Mayor, Mr Mi.ckie. explamed that tbe Borough Council had requested the Chamber to call the meeting for the purpose of making arrangements for the suitable decoration of the main street. He explained that the council was already ccunmitted to quite a large suid in providing street lightihg and the proVision of mementoes and amusements tor the children. This bemg so he thought that it was only tair that the retailers should make some coipmunity effort toward the provision of decorations. He understood that in Hastings the retailers had done something ot the kind, and had arranged to have the street decorations carned out by contract. Mr H. B. Roacb suggested that the town sbould be divided £ into sections and canvassed for subscriptions for a eommunity iund. Mr Wharmby agreed that some sort of eommunity effort should be ttiade, and suggested that a committee be formed to deal with tbe matter. Messrs C- Carlson, H. B. Roaeh, E. Jt. Fortune, H. B. Smart and W. H. Taylor were appointed as a committee to administer. tbe funds collected l'or the eommunity decoration. It was also resolvcd to'ask individual retailers to eo-operate by decorating their own sbop windows.
