OLD PEOPLE ENTERTAINED AT W.C.T.U. AFTERNOON
The Hastings branch of the Women' s Uhristian Temperance IJnion enter•iained the old people, at their monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. • Mrs J. Wilson presided and • welcomed the juests. who were eac.Ii presented on arrival with a buttouhole of flowers and when leaving with a spring bulb to fplant. The oldest lady present, Mrs M. Portes, and the- oldest gentleman, Mr J. Hodby, were each presented with a tiny gift. The Itev. lt. B. Gosnell, cn behalf of the executive, made the presentations amid applause. During the afternoon Mr Gosnellgave a very helpful talk taking the letters W.C.T.U. to stand i'or "Wo Cannot Tolerate Unf airness' 1 and "We Cannot. Tolerate Unhappine.ss." Ho showed how indulgence in alcohol as a beverage produced unfairness and unhappiness. "Tlie members of this organisation," ,he. said,, "are banded togerther to. bring a'bout the time when everything. that is .unf air... to little children, .the sick and the .whole family of human kind will be .banished. The time, is coming, . when the imhappiness produced hy ihe liquor traffic will be a thing of the past bescause alcohol will be abolished as being unfit for human consumption." He urged those present to- be true to their traditions and to the pledge of their organisation . Mr Gosnell, in honouring the memory of those who had passed on since th5 previous old folks afternoon, paid a tribute to their loyal and deyoted ,service, while all stood in silent sympathy. The names read'were: Mrs R. Stanley, Mrs E. Adams, Mrs F, J. JDarby, Mrs D. Boyle, Mrs W. Goodall, Mrs Baumgart senr., Mrs A. Kidd, Mrs McArthur, Mrs W. Blitchford, Mrs Gigg,' Mrs Saywell senr., Mrs M. Adamson, Nurse Oliphant, Mr and Mrs Barbour, Mr Furiiiss, and.Mr Smart. A pleasant programme ot music and recitaticn was contributed to by Mrs Marsicano, (vocal solo), Miss Sowerby (vocal solo), Miss P. Turner (violin solo), Miss Holmes (recitation), 'Mrs Porter (a cliaracter recitation), and Mary Buckingham (recitation). A dainty afternoon tea was handed round by the members and was enjoyed by all. The meeting closed with the Doxology.
