WAIPUKURAU AND ONGAONGA MEET

waipukurau, This Day. liugby football was officially opened in Central Hawke's Bay when Waipukurau met Ongaonga at Central Park cn Saturday. Tlie ground was m a hard state, but misty rain caused the ball to become greasy and spoiled any attempts at back play. Conibination between the players was lacking, but despite that the game was qune interesting. Waipukurau won by six points to three. The teanis lined up as follow : — Waipukurau: B. Atkius, T. Fergusou, T. Hampton, R. Spotwood, P. Walker, R. Crappe, J. McKay, A. Cliapmau, W. Benson, L. Dixon, P. Johnston, H. Lirttle, M. Fergusson, Ivl. Laue and M. Walker. Ongaonga: A. Rasmussen, B. Freemantle, Buick, Ward, Hind, Carroll, Kniglit, R. Ross, A. Freemantle, W. McDonald, W. Ross, Richardson, J. McDonald, Cosser and Douglass, With both teams relying on their forwards, play swung from one end of the field to the other, with Ongaonga on top in the first half. Onga, fcrcing the play, were penalised in the Waipukurau 25, and a powerful kick by M. Lane carried play downfield. A further penalty kick taken by Johnston failed to open Waipukurau' s score. Onga retaliated and Knight attempted a penalty kick well out. A determined run by T. Ferguson put Waipukurau again on the offensive, and Rasmussen saved brilliantly when the Waipukurau fonvards broke ruway with a clear field. Onga were penalised and Dixon' s attempt at goal hit the upright. For the remainder of the first half play centred in the Waipukurau 25, with the Blue and Whites defending desperately. Half time was called with neither team having opened its score. On the resumption of play a strong run by T. Ferguson into the Onga 25 resulted in Benson scoring for Waipukurau from a forward ruck. The kick by T. Ferguson went astray. Waipukurau 3, Ongaonga 0. Play fluctuated in the Onga 25, and the. Waipukurau forwards crossed with Dixon scoring well out. His kick missed, making the scores: Waipukurau 6, Ongaonga 0. Play centred round half-way for a considerable period. The Waipukurau backs, in a neat passing movement, took the ball to the Onga 25, but were effectively stopped-* when Buick tackled Hampton in possession. From a loose scrum Knight intercepted a pass to Crappe, $ad put in a strong run downfield. R.. Ross, continuing on with the attack, scored between the posts. W. Ross took the kick, which missed. Time was called immediately after with fTie scores : Waipukurau 6, Ongaonga 3. Mr C. Woodward refereed. JUNTOR MATCH The Waipukurau juniors played Takapau juniors in a keenly-contested game at Central Park. The result of the match was : Waipukurau 6, Takapau 5. The scorers were: — Waipukurau: Smales (try), Watson (try). Takapau: Drake (try and conversion).
