Successes of F. D. Jones The feat of the Riccarton trainer, F. D. Jones, well reraembered in Hawke's Bay as first jockey for the late Hon. J. D. Ormoni in Stuart Waddell's day, in winning four classic races with two horses in 0110 wes-; when Royal Chief sotied in The C.J.C. Clampagne Stakes and Chauenge Stakes, and Cerne Abbas took the Great Northern Oaks and St. Leger, was probably the highlight of a training career that has achieved great success in classic and weigiht-for-age raoes, says a southern scribe. Indeed, there is hardly an important event of the kind that has not been won by one of Jones' pupils. A mere list of these triumphs is imposing enough. Among the many good gallopers trained by Jones, was Limerick, who in six seasons won £39,079. He won 29 races, 13 in succession, the most valuable beirfg the A.J.O. St. Leger, All Aged Stakes, Craven Plate, King's Cup, Chelmsford Stakes (twice) and dead-heated in the Spring! Stakes. These are all Australian events, and his New Zealand triumphs included the Dunedin Champagne , Stakes, Canteroury Challenge Stakes, Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes, Canterbury Cup, Stead Gold Cup, and Hazlett Stakes. He also ran second in such notable handicaps as the Sydney Cup and Metropolitan. Also in • Austr alia, Nightly won the Randwick Plate, C.B. Fisher Plate and Moonee Valley Gold Cup and a champion of earlier years, Ballymena, included the Australian Derby in his victories. In the D'ominion Ballymena had an imposing list of successes, including the Great Northern Derby and St. Leger. Amythas was another giant from the same stable, winning the best weight-for-age contests in the country, a number of them more than once. Murihaupo, Reputatioun, Glentruin, Custodian, Custos and Kilrea were others who secured classic honours ior the Riccarton trainer.
