JUMPING SEASON

— Special from "Early

Plenty of Promising Recruits NORTHERN NOTES

(By Telegraph-

Bird.") AUCKLAND , This Day. Kiltowyn, who has not raced since tRe Christmas before last, is sprinting bi-illiantly at Ellerslie. He was nominated for the second day of the Auckland autumn meeting but was not forward enough to be produced. He will probably make his re-appearance at the Waikato fixture next month. Lord Valj whose form over the sticks last v/inter was quite good, is another being prepared for winter racing, and it is probable that he will be one of the headquarters candidates for the Great Northem Hurdles !n June. As a winner.on the flat up to 10 furiongs, Lord Val should not have much difflculty in staying the two and a-half miles of this important event, especially as he is very partial to heavy going. He has a great record at Trentham . in J uly , and if he goes on the right way he will be there again this season. A Dashing 'Chaser. Electrio Flash, who is a pretty useful sort of steepleehas is due to make her reappeararice on the second day at Whangarei, when she will contest the hurdle race. So far her efforts over the sticks have not been in keeping with her runs over the country, althougih in the latter department she has proved herself a dashing jumper. With normal improvement made from her efforts as a ehaser last season, Electrio Elash should be capable of winniug an important cross-couutry event this winter. When Young haddon made his debut at Trentham last July it did not seem as if it would be loug before he made a name for himself in the hack class at least, hut hine mo'uths have elapsed and he has still to get on the winning iist. One of his best efforts was his second to JPirate King at Te Hapa last February, and although. he has failed consistently since, it is probable that he will do better next month, for he has been galloping smartly on his home track. The noviee events at Te Hapa neXt month should find Young Paddon leaving the maiden ranks. Since Jalldy Karo went into retirement a couple of years ago very little has been heard of him, although it was ■ known that it was intended to try him out as a hurdler. He is at present undergoing a schooling lesson and not doing so badly either, but it is extremely doubtful if he will ever be in the same class as his brother, Prince Lu, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles six years ago. The latter was one of the best hurdlers ever seen in the north, generally believed to lack stamina until he led all the. way when capturing the Great Northern. The well-bred three-year-old Quadroon, who was let-up after his failures at Ellerslie four months ago, is back in steady work at Te Awamutu and this suggests that he will make his next appearances at Te Papa and on his home track next month. When he dead-heat-,ed with another "promising three-year-old in the Waikato Hack Cup in the late spring a bright future was predicted for him and perhaps this will be borne out next season, when he may be found holding his own in handicap company, for he is bred to stay • a middle distance at least. Mungacre's Programme. Oue of the disappointments on the 'flat, after an auspieious beginning in the spring, was the sprinted Mungacre, among whose early victories was the sprint on the openingi day of the Auckland spring meeting. Apart from an occasional glimpse of form in the interim, the Acre gelcjing, has not acted up to his Ellerslie win and now he is being schooled with a view to racing as a hurdler next month. He will' have splenty .of opportunities to get this branch of racing next month at Pukekohe, Te Awamutu and Te Papa and may then take on the really formidable hurdles at Ellerslie in June. Mungacre should make good at this game. Leo Colossus was a fair staying hack, even if his record was not outstanding, for he just lacked that little extra bit necessary to make the "difference beHe did not win a race last season, but tween winning and fllling a minor place. Was second on six occasions, and experience has indicated that this is just the type of horse that "should do well over the battens, provided he takes kindlyi to jumping. Leo Colossus has been' schpoEng very well at headquarters and it would not be surprising to find him doing better in future in his races. He is one that may be taken to Hawera for the opcning of the jumping season. Amongi the horses that have been added to the -list "after eompleting their racing for the current season are Bachelor King and Paepata. The latter sliowed a lot of pace in the middle of the season and then appeared to go off, but he may come back much better as a gelding and should do well when next produced. Bachelor King regisbered some splendid efforts in tlie two-year-old handicap events under big weights, even if he was by no means good enough for the crack youngsters; aud in this respect he was well segonded by Airam. Next season Bachelor King should be one of the best of the northern three-year-olds and will be capable of winning handicaps, even if he does not get promoted to the list of i classic winners.
