DUG BY "THE DELVER." No less than 59 horses were railed north from Auckland for the Whangae rei meeting by the special train that left on Thursday morning. * * ' # Mr G- M. Currie is sending one' of his present yearlings through to F. Davis, at Woodyille, a practic© he has pursued for several seasons past. « « * With the exception of the thrge principal handicaps, the Whyte, Parliamentary and Winter Oats, the flat handicap minimum at the Wellington winter meeting will be 8.0. • # - ♦ Haeretonu proved a- disappointment on the flat, but there is apparently hope for him as a hurdler. He has been jumping in improved style at Riccarton and is already being iicked off as a good winner during the winter. • # • The most forward of J. Fryer's jumpers, says a Hawera correspondent, is the Qynic mare Indiscretion, who appears in great order to send along when required. Indiscretion looks a much improyed mare, and her prospects seem decidedly • promising for early steeplechase events. • « » * Racing is thriving in Japan. At the Kyoto Olub meeting at Tokio, which lasted eight days, the average attendance was 60,000, while 14,214,980 yen (approximately £826,000) was wagered with the totalisator. On the last day of the meeting a totalisator record was cstablished with approximately £138,000. ' * # • In future hurdle races at Trentham the' hurdles are to be lightly padded on the take-off side of the top railing. Previously the railing was plain board, but the specifications for a. uniform hurdle under the Rules of Racing suggest that the top rail be protected by canvas or other suitable material, and the Wellington club is conforming with the directions. The hurdle to be used will be identical with that in use at Riccarton. # # • In referring-to a shrinkage in the attendance at the A.J.O. autumn meeting, a Sydney paper said: "Admission charges are not the only drawback to ottendances at races. Tlie eport has suffered considerably through adverse criticism, hot all of which is undeserved, and *firmer control and a. more genei'al understanding between racing committees and the people might be the key that would turn condemnation to approbation, and command a following." * * # The Newcastle (N.S.W.) . Jockey Club is making a departure by offering special grizes to the trainers of winners in tho principal races at its two-day meeting at tho beginning of next month. The trainer of the winner of the Newcastle Handicap of 200sovs. seven furiongs, will reeeive a cash prize of £50, and there will Jio a. similar prize for tho trainer of the winner of the Newcastle May Day Handicap, of 200sovs. # « * The successful Randwick trainer, J. T. Jamieson, who has generally been a good patron of tlie New Zealand yearling saies, has sent two colts across to be handled by Mr M. Grogan, at tho Grange Stud, Westmere. The colts, both brown in colour, arrived on Wednesday. Oue is owned by Mr Georgo Tancred, and is by Windbag from Recuperator, by Verbius from a Chaucer mare at Mr Sol Green's stud. The other colt is by Pantheon from Mimic, by Magpie out of a full-sister to King

Ingoda, a Melbourne Cup winner. Many Australian owners are recognising the benefit of sending young stock to New Zealand for deyelopment.
