WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Gathering at Takapau A very well attended meeting of the Takapau Women 's Institute held on Thursday afternoon was presided over by the" president, Mrs W. B. White, and the new seeretary, Mrs G. W. May, took over the duties of her office. An invitation was received from the Ashley Clinton Institute to attend their fifth' birthday party to be held on April 29. Miss Gamble, as delegate, gave a very full report of the half-yearly conf erence of the Southern Hawke 's Bay Federation and, on the motion of Mrs W. Jackson, senr., was accorded a hearty- vote of thariks, Mrs Riddel, Hatuma, gave a very interesting talk on her visit to Japan and many beautiful examples of Japanese arts and craf te were exhibitdQ by her. On' the motion of Mesdames Caughley and Jackson, Mrs Riddel was cordially thanked for her address. Mrs G. W. May, who had recently been married, was the recipient of many pretty and useful articles from members present, the afternoon taking the form of a linen tea. The competition for the prettiest apron resuited: Mrs R. J. Sanders 1, Mrs Robertson 2, Mrs P. J. Sanders 3. Arrangements were made for the Takapau Institute birthday party to be held on May 30. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs R. S. Askew for prizes donated. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. Caughley, H. Drake, W.: Clayton and Miss K. White.
