WELLINGTON, April %. Tariff changes involving suhstatitial xeductions in respeet - of - impoited • maize was announced last night by-thn acting-Ministoi* of Customs,', the Hon. M. Fagan. ' v ' "The Government his decidedr that the duty of 1/6 per cental payaMe sv der the British pre'ferential tariff on whole maxze is to be xemoved until July 31 next, and the duties payablei on whole maize under the general tariff and -On Grushed maize, are .also to he reduced hy 1/6 per cental, " said tha Minister. "This- action is being taken owing to the existing shortage of maize and fowf wheat in the Dominion, and will apply to all shipments* of maize,. hoth" whole and crushed, imported on' or 'aftef March 31 last. The new season's erop of New Zealapd-grown maize will, thoj Government is informed, he on-the mar«i ket from August 1 next, and it is. hoped •that supplies available will he suffieient for Dominion requirements after that date.
