Public-Vehicle Rates Lowered

{By Telesrnph-

WELLINGTON, Last Night. A furtner statement on fixing the rates for third-party insurance premiums for 1937-1938, was made to-day by the Minister of Transport, Hon. R. Semple. "My attention has been drawn to headings in certain papers indicating that there will be no increase ty. premiums, said the Minister," and I want it to be clearly understood that my previous remarks were confined to private motor cars (class 4). As a matter of fact, t.he records of certain public motor vehicles (omnibuses and service cars) continue to show a very- gratifying reduction in claims, so much so that I am reconuKiending to Cabinet that the following j -oductions in p-remiums be made. - ' 'Previous premium — Class *8 V (omnibuses) £6 plus 5s for each'seat over 10 (maximum £10). Class 8 C (service cars and coaches) £6 plus 15s for each seat over 7 (maximum £12 15s). "Proposed premium 1937-38 — (Jlass 8 V (oinnibuses) £6 plus 2s 6d for each aeat over 10 (maximum £S), class 8 U (service cars and coaches) £6 plus 7s 6d for each seat over 7 (maximum £9 7s 6d). "In regard to omnibuses it will bo seen that the maximum premium which applies to 26 seaters and over, has been reduced by 20 per cent. while the maximum for ser.vice cars which commeuces

at 16 seats, lias been reduced by over ao per cent. Naturally I am very pleased. at. the exceilent record which drivers oij these vehicles are establishing for safq and careful driving and their example\ is worthy of emulation by other road users. Unf ortunately the same record - has not been attained by business cars and trade motors (classes 5 and 6).j Claims for these vehicles continue toi . increase and I have been compelled to recommend Cabinet to increase the premiums from 41s to 45s for class 5 and from 27s to 30s for class' 6. Fron* this it will be seen that safo driving also means cheaper driving and L hopn in the near future, the reeords of all drivers will be such that all round r&i duddons will. be practicable." .■ .
