Recent Work Reviewed ■ . i . . uT RATE COLLECTION The monthly meeting of the Taradale Town Board was held la'st night. Present: Messrs J. Williamson (chai*» man), J. Wainscott, J. A. Wilkinson, W. H. C. Howard, G. Webb, F. 0. Anderson and J. Gilmour. The granting of donations to the King George V. Memorial National Fund and the Hawke's Bay Art Society were deferred until consideratlon was given to the board 's finance®. The clerk and overseer, Mr W. G. Jarvis, reported that further bitumen sealing work had been carried out on both Avondale road and Elbourne street. About 34 chains of tar-sealing had been completed on Guppy road from the Greenmeadows Post Office to Burness road. In reference to other works he Jeported as follow: — Footpaths: The footway in frfnt of the -school in Church road "was surfaced and it is proposed to attend to other footpaths when- the Toad sealing programme for the season has been completed. Drains: Owing to ahhormal growth of water-creiss, many drains require attention as soon as pOssible. Purimu Creek was cleaned from below Burness- road to Guppy road. Praetically all the large drains have been cleaned since January of this year. Kates: The amount outstanding at March 31, 1936, wa® £393. Of this amount £162 has been collected and written off. Rates struck for 1936/87 amounted to £2,496 of which £2,251 has been collected, leaving £245 Outstanding. The position is not so good as the previous year. This is accounted for by two of the largest owner® failing to meet .their obligations. Mr Wilkinson said that the board's staff was to be congratulated on the progress that had been made during the season. The residents were pleateed to see the forward move that was being made this year. Mr Wainscott, in supporting the previous speaker's remarks, ®aid that the expeditious way that the work was being carried on with a small staff was to be commended. The ehairman said that the roads had received attention, and it was hoped that something could teoon be done with the footpaths. Considering the very difficult year experienced for the carrying out of work the staff had done wonderfully well. The- overseer explained that attention to the footpaths had been delayed owing to the extra work that had had to be done to the drains owing to the abEormal growth.
