Waipukurau Members Discuss Town Improvement

(From

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Mr J. Wharmby presided over a meeting of the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce held to-night. The Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce wrote asking the Waipukurau Chamber to oo-operate in an effort to arrange some unanimity in the holding of the Wellington Anniversary Day holiday to avoid the confusion which aros© on the last occasion. After some ccmsiderable discussion during which it was suggested that it would be better to observe Dominion Day as a national holiday instead of the various provincial anniversary days, it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the secretary with instructions to confer with the secretary of the Hawke's Bay Eimployeers Association in Napier and report back to the Chamber. Farmers' Weck. The secretary reported having been aprpoached by Mr F. C. Danieis, secretary of the Ongaonga Farmers' Union with a request that the shopkeepers of Waipukurau assist the union by arranging speeial window; displays during ' 'Narxners' Week' ' . It was resolved to acced© to this request and to ask all sficpkeepers in Waipukurau to arrange window displays for nexti week, stressing anything of interest to farmers with whieh their busmess might deal; and also to illuminate their shops. Messrs J. Wharmby, president, H. B. Roach, vice-president, and F. H. G. Dunn, secretary, were appointed to represent th© Chamber of Commerce at the public meeting being called to arrange for Coronation celebrations. Litter In Street Mr Shidmore moved that the attention of the Borough Council be drawn to the amount of litter to be seen lying about the main street and that they be asked .to consider the pcssibility oi more frequent cleaning of the street. Mr .Roach suggested that the council be asked to consider the making of a service alleyway aiong the back of the shops on the South side of the street. There was already such an alley for the greater part of the distance. If this were done th© two present approaches from this alley to the main street would be clOsed and the spaces used as business premises, suggested Mr Roach. These approaches at the present time constituted a grave danger to pedestrians, especially the school children. Street Lighting. Mr C. E. Carlson opened the subject of street lighting by remarking that "Waipukurau was the most dmgy town he had ever seen in his life". "Quite relently 1 was told that numbers of tourists stop to ask their way. to Waipawa at night and state that they are ging on there to look for accommodation because they cannot get any here." h© added. Mr Roach said he thought the Borough. Council were taking up the matter of street lighting. Mr Carlson said that he was referring to the community lighting by shopkeepers themselves. Mr Roach said that the Chamber shouid consider the matter of speeial street illuinination for the Coronation celebratiqns. Mr Dunn said that in every place that he knew of the local bodies were dealing with this matter and he thought that there wag some possibility of the local Borough Council doing something in Waipukurau.
