(By Telesraph-
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night* A scheme for stabilising the market ifor butter will be brought into operation in Wellington within the next week, according to Mr. P. R. Picot, Di- | rector of Internal Marketing, who | arrived in Christchurch to-day in thef course of a tour of the South Island. Mr. Picot said that the working of| the scheme would be studied closely with further schemes for other centresl in view. His visit to the South Island | (he will go on to Dunedin and Invercargill) was to q)low him to look intoi marketing problems here and to gatherj information preparatory to working outi schemes of stabilisation for such pro-l duce as eggs, butter, bacon and honey.{ "It is the Government 's intention to1 ,co-ordinate the selling of primary pro-l duce," he said. "It has been madel .abundantly clear by the Government) jthat there will be no interference withl Ithe existing channels if they are effiiciently carrying out a service to the community. I am firmly convinced that! ultimately the stabilisation of markets! generally will be of substantial benefiti •to the consumer and produeers both! ibut, of course, stabilisation cannot bel brought in at a i^oment's notice. " Mr. Picot said he was anxious toi .rnake it clear that the depa^tment had no intention of taking over any businesses in the South Island. The department was most anxious to avoid any embarrassment of existing commerciai chauuels.
