FITNESS OF CARS

To-Day is Last Day For Testing MOTORISTS WARNED To-morrow is officially the day when tlie "old crocks" of the motoring world in New Zealand will be off the road, for to-day is th© last , day allowed motorists to obtain warrants of fitness for their cars. During the past monthi garages in. Hastings and elsewhere throughout the Dominion have been experiencing a boom period as th© result of the decision to hav© all motor vehicles uudergo the first of the six-monthly tests for mechanical fitness. Th© regulations call for every motor-vehicle owner to have a warxant of fitness attached to his vehicle on and after April 1, but while ampl© waming was given the. motoring publio the inevitable last-minute rush prevailed. Th© Easter holiday period accentuated the rush for tests, and a contributing cause also was the fact that in a number of towns, of which Hastings was one, there was a very limited number of garages that had authority to issue warrants. The position in this regard has been eased very considerably during the past week by the issue of additional authorities, but it is generally admitted that there was no hope of all the vehicles in th© district being properly tested in time to conform with the regulations. Questioned this monxing as to what steps were contemplated to exxforc© the regulations the borough traffic inspector, Mr D. Maxxn, said that it was imperative that the motoring publio should conform with0 the regulations, and though there was no desire on the part of th© department to harrass motorists it would b© necessary to take steps to see that .the regulations ixave been complied with. "There has been plenty of time for the motorists to get their cars tested," he said, "and after all there is no compulsion for a man to drive his car when it has not been tested and granted a warrant. "■ Those who have not had their vehicles tested are advised, in their own interests, to have the tests carried out immediately, for undoubtedly steps will be taken to see that all vehicles on th© road have undergone tes.ts."
