Motorist's Narrow Escape

WAIROA, Last Night. At the first meeting this season of the Pirates' FootbaU Club, Mr L. W. Ebbett presided. Correspondence was read in reference to the proposed Easter tournament. It was decided that though the Pirates would bo unable to put in an entry this year it would eupporfc a movement to establish a perma?nent Easter tournament on the same lines as the Marist clubs' Spillane Cup event. It was decided, tentatively, to enter a senior team this year. Car Burned. On Monday night & car belonging to Mr Erio Daken, while ascending Te Uhi hill, took fire and was totally destroyed. The vehicle was valued at about £100. Ths driver was proceeding to Whakaki, and when near the top of Te Uhi the car etopped suddenly and began to back down the cteep cuttingy and the brakes failing to hold it went on to apparent destruction. The driver, opening one of the side doors, jumped out to the road and escaped injury. The car went down a short distance further, crashed over a bank and then burst into flames The Viaduot* A visitor from Napier yesterday reports that the last girder in the big viaduct over the Mohaka river * gorgp was rivetted into its place in the hugd structuro that day. The bracing 5s still to be undertaken, also the laying of the raik and the erection of a six-foot timber windscreen. This should take about two months. Crlcket. In the Hopper Shield cncket competition Tuai defeated the Wairoa Dairy Factory during the week-end on the first innings by 93 runs. Tuai W.l. ' The f ourth birthday of ' the Tuai branch of the Women's Institute drew a large atten4ance. The hall was beautifully deoorated for the ochasion, and the floor was excellent for the dancr ing. Music was provided by Mr C. Baker. The cutting of the cake was a feature of the evening, and was carried out by the president, the youngest, and the oldest members of the branch. Bouquets were presented to the president, Mrs Bumstead, the vicepresident, Mrs McDonald, and the secretary, Mrs Killen, who was also tendered a gift in token of her fine work during the year The prizes won during the year were then presented ; —Cooking, Mrs Eban 1, Mrs McDonald 2, Mrs Breen 3. Sewing, Mrs Frame 1, Mrs Munro 2, Mrs Dawson and Mrs Roy (tie) 3. A large number of games, etc., and a short play by the members, made up a very attractive programme.
