(Fron

WAIPUKURAU, This Day. The Waipukurau Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr L W. N. Mackie, presiding over Cra. G. J. Bromeli, J. C. Windl8, H. Martin, R. W. Carpenter, and the clerk-engineer, Mr H. B. Smart. Leave of absence was granted Crs. J. L. Brathwaite and J. McCarthy. The Commissioner of Crown Lands replied to a request for a grant towards the Tukituki scenic rdserve, pointing out that the control of the reserve had been vested' in the council for the last seventeen years, and suggesting tha't if it was in the state described by the council it appeared that the council had not gone to much expense in the preservation of the reserve. The Commissioner suggested that as it was a favoured place for picuic par ties, the ratepayers should be prepared to contribute something towards its preservation. Councillors were of the opinion that as it stood at present it was not much use, as the regulations debarred the lighting of fires and many other things. The chairman recalled that the council had intended to take steps to . clear some of the biackberry, but had found so many restrictions and regulations imposed that it had not proved practicable to carry out the work. As the Commissioner asked for an estimate of the cost of the proposed improvements it was resolved to ascertain this information before the next council meeting. Tho Education oBard advised that it was prepared to donate the necessary land for the rounding off of the corner of the boundary wall of the school playing area at the corner of St. Mary 's road and Porangahau road if the council would undertake to do the work without cost to the boaTd. It was decided to ask the permission of the school committee to carry out the work. A letter was received from Mr D. W. Neild, thanking the council for the confidence they had shown in him in electing him as their representative on the Hospital Board. An invilation was received from the New Zealand Farmers' Union to attend a field day a the Smedley Estate, Tikokino, next Wednesday, March 24. Commenting on th6 engine.er's report, tho Mayor said he thought he should point out that Mr Smart had estimated that there would be 16,000 square yards to be sealed in the Racecourse road raain highway, and it had worked out at 15,944, which showed great accuracy in Mr Smart 's estimating. He also wished to add that the foreman of works had volunteered the information that the surface prapeared for sealing was one of the best he had ever seen. The credit for this was due to Mr Smart. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to approach the Central Hawke's Bay Power Board with a request that it consideT the possibility of granting a reduced rate for lighting and healing in. the Municipal Theatre in view of the large amount of current used.
