CHIEF POST OFFICE REQUEST

Reply to Hastings CounciFs Representations MATTER 0F T0LL CALLS Eeplying to the representations made by the Hastings Borough Council, at the request of the Hastings Chaxnber Of Commerce, to have Hastings constituted a chief post office, the Post-master-General advised that ihe creation o£ another postal district witliin the present Napier district would be both unnecessary and uncconomical. Hegarding the toll service, which the council had considered 'should not be conducted through Napier, the letter stated that the esisting arrangement whereby Hastings toll traffie is centralised ai the Napier telephone exchange, besides being more econcmical -and convenient from a departmental point of view, ensures a quicker and more efficieht service to the public than would be obtainable if tolls were handJed iocally.
