SEWER EXTENSION
Fosition Reviewed In aceordance with instructions, the borough engineer, Mr. C. E. Evans, presented at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening a report on the position of properties on the outskirts of the town which might conceivably be included in the service given by the borough sewerage system. He reported that there were 21 properties requiring installation of pumping machinery and at present the nightsoil service called upon 36 properties. in the gravitation area there were 12 properties with no sewer at present and there were three where the sewer is running along the frontage. TKe total cost of the extensions is estimated at £1,391, or an average oi £114 5/~ per house. As an alter&ative scheme the installation of patent pans has been suggested, and in this regard the engineer points out that the number of houses which ara at present unable to connect with the sewer is 33 and the cost oi providing and installing pans, together with servicing was estimated at £121 10/3 a year, or approximately £3 16/8 a house a year. The present nightsoil service was costing about £200 a year. or about £6 13/- a house. The Medical Officer of Health wrote expressing doubt Tegarding the satisf actory working of the chemical closets and suggested that a trial of six insta" lations for three months be made. The council decided to defer consicler ation until preparing next year's estimates.
