Points From Council Qrder Paper ITEMS OF INTEREST /The Mayor, Mr G.'A,* Maddison, presided over the monthly meetihg- of the Hastings Borough Council last evening. Others present were Crte. A. L Rainbow, S. J. McKee, T. Falconer, P. M. Cohr, P. Loach, C. H. Slater, G-. W. McCormick, T. S. Dobson and S. Ashcroft. • • A request was reecived from Mr G. A. Frethey asking that the metalled surfaces on the bus route via Willowpark road, Jervois street, Sylvan road, Ellison road, Park road, Terrace road and Haig street, be widened and that several holes on the sides of the roads be levelled out. Upon the engineer reporting the cost of widening the streets would be £107 and that there was not sufficient traffic to keep the grass down on a wider formation than at present, it was decided to level out only the sides of the streets named and carry out minor repairs. * * *

Complaints were made by three property owners in Maddison street of disfigurement to the fences and frontages by bitumen being blown on to them during recent road-surface sealing operations. The matter as to be referred to the contractor who is responsible for attention. * * * The Parkvale Golf Club wrote stating that two concrete tables have been erected in the line of play to one of the greens at Windsor Park and also that during the camping season the fairways were used by campers. In this regard the superintendent reported that the tables were not in the line of play, plenty of width having been allowed in fairways. Attention had been given to campers erecting tents in the fairways. • • • The engineer, Mr O. E. Evans, reported that last month 44,340,000 gallone of water were pumped, compared with 39,475,000 gallons a year ago. The rainfall was .11 inch and 11.32 inches respectively. • • • The attendance at the Women 's Rest last month totalled 5497, there being 4414 patrons, 102 visitors and 981 visitors to the Plunket rooms. Cash receipts totalled £18 1/7. • • • Tests for driver's licences totalling 324 have been carried out by the borough traffie inspectors this year and a total of 3287 licences have been issued. * * * The assistant-borough nuisance inspector, Mr H. A. Green, inepected 725 residences last month and sent out 224 notices regarding noxious weeds, rubbish, leaky taps and dog registrations. He impounded 16 head of stock and 12 dogs. He registered 215 dogs last month, bringing the total to 456. * • * Accounts totalling £9780 1/3 were passed for payment. • • • The statement of rates showed that at February 28 last £2275 17/9 arrears had been collected, leaving £935 3/10 outstanding. The total collection of the current year's rates up to March 13 was 96.12 per cent., compared with 94.98 at the same day last year. * * * There are now 1490 adult and 529 children subscribers to the library, and last month 221 new books were purchased. • • • Applications from residents for sealing Park road south, and Alexander street, and forming a footpath and channel in Willowpark road between Albert and Alexander streets, were deferred for consideration with next year's estimates. • • • The suggestion of the Hastings and District Progress League that certain beautification work could be achieved, with little expense, in respect of the trees in the vicinity of the Oddfellows' Hall was approved of, and the proposal is to be given a trial.
