E. Evans, in his monthly report to ihe Hastings Borough Council. He mentioned tbat ihe contractor had previously inttaated that he was waiting nntil sufficient pipes were made so as to proceed •with the excavatton work without a break, "but Mr. Evans points out that the pipes, with the exception of 20, have heen made, and any further delay might add to the difficulties of the work of laying and jointkxg.

f'Ufhe weather is still dry and the pob-soil water is lower at present than it has heen for the last two years," he says. "A jBlood in the river would, however, raise the level of this water and the cost of trenching and puxnping might be inereased as much as f our times; in faet, nnder these conditions it might be found impossible to proceed with the work nntil the level of water .dropped." The engineer added that the following mumber of 8ft. long pipes had been made:— 536 of the 42in., 557 of the 36in.*and 465 of the 33in., ahd of this mumber 348, 396 and 316 respectively had been carted and placed along the line of the sewer. The sub-contractor had completed the pile driving at the river crossing and was now construeting the beams to carry the pipes. It was found neeessorjr to lengthen some of the piles f rom 1ft. fb 7ft. in order to get a satisfactory f oundation, the total extra lengfb being 101 feet and the cost £182 3/-. "The piles were driven to a satfsfactory fonndation and will carry .the added weight of a footbridge," he added. The Council decided that the contractor be written to Teminding him of the conditions of the contract, and drawing his attention to the necessity for an eaTly etart, in order to taka idvantage of favourable weather conSitions before winter sets in, and also point out that an extension of timo in which to eomplete the contract cannot be grant&d by the council,
