Two New Records
ATHLETES IN NAPIER Driscoll Lowers Two-Mile Walk Time MURAKASO SUCCEEDS The special athletio meeting run under the auspices of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Asaociation, for the purpoBe of giving Hawke's Bay people a» oppol'tunity of seeing the two Japanese athletes, Murakoso (diBtauce runner) and Togami (jumper), attracted a very large crowd to McLean Park last evenrng, and those who attended were privileged to eee som® UQtable and outstanding performances. The visiting athletes wero agcorded a very hearty reception npon making their appearance, and Mr A. D, McIvor, president of the Hawke's Bay— Poverty Bay Centre, extended a cordial invitation to the athletes from the Land of Nippon. Mr Kurasawo, who acts bm manager and interpreter for the Japanese competitors, replied on their behalf and said they had been delighted with their reception by the people and the athletes of the Dominion. They had met some of the best runndrs in the world at ihe sports meetings they had appeared at in New Zealand, and had formed a high opinion of them. He could promise an equal cordial reception to all who came to Tokio for the Olympic Games in 1940. The epectators who expected great things at the sports meeting last nig|ht were in no way disappointed- The meeting opened brilliantly, for the New Zealand amateur champion walker lan Driscoll not only lowered the longstanding two-miles walk record of 14 min. 20 4-osecs., put up by A. Brady in 1896, but fractured the record by no less than 15secs., Drisooll's time being lSmin. 57 3-5sec. When the time was announced, the applause which greeted the performance could have been heard a very long distance away. Later in the evening, the Japanese distance runner, Murakoso, made an attempt on the two-miles record of 9 min. 20 1-fiseca., held by Randojpb Bose, and he too was suocessful in his attempt, running the distance in 9min 39 4-5eecs, thus beating the previous record by 2-5ths. of a second. The other Japanese athlete Togami, won both the hop, step and jump and high jump, but in neither event did he get anywbere near New Zealand record iigures. Togami, however, was handicapped by the fading light, and also is not at his best in jumping off gi'ass. The other events on the programme were all fully up to the usual high standard and the Napier Amateur Athletio Olub and centre officaals, are to be oongratulated upon havjng given patrone such a splendid programme, one, indeed, which will live in sports memories for a long time. During the eveningj Mr Molvor also presented Miss Rona Tong, of Hastings, with a handsome silver cup in recognition of her victory in the wonjen's hurdles champiouship at the New Zealand amateur athletic championships at Auckland in which event she established a fresh record, beating the previous record (her own) by 4-5ths. of a second. All tlie conditions required for the reoognition of records were complied with by the officials and application will be made to have both Driscoll'a and Murakoso'* records duly recognised.
