Keen Competition For Breeding Ewes LAMB PRICES DOWN (By Tolegraph— Press ' Assooiation.) GISBORNE, This Day. At the weekly Matawhero sale held yesterday by the Poverty Bay Stockzrokers' Association, main interest centred in the sjbore sheep section. The number of store sheep offered was smaller than usnal, while the entry was about average . quality. Lambs were difficult to sell and the prices obtained were down by 1/6 to 2/- compared with late rates. Keen competition was in evidence for breeding ewes, and the best lines sold at values a shade higher than those of last week. The market for wethers was on a Par with last week's. Many of the lots that did not attract competition wero passed in, hut some were brought privately later. BEEF Only 20 head of fat cattl© came forward, being solely dairy sorts. The following is a list of the prices: Three Jersey cows, well finished, £4 ; 1 do. lighter, £3 2/6; 3 Jersey cows, £3 5/-; 3 do. not finished, £2 10/-; 2 Jersey cows, light, £2; 2 cows, not finished, £1 15/-; 2 good Jersey cows (p) £3 15/-; 2 l$-yeai: heifers (p) £2. FAT SHEEP In the fat sheep section the entry was again small, .only a few; pens being offered. The cffering was of good quality and attracted keen competition. Prices included" the following: Eive lambs, 21/1; 2 do. 22/1; 29 ewes, 19/-; 24, young, suitable for breeding, 247-; 8 lambs, 20/2; 37 ewes, 19/-; 2 Southdown ewes, 23/-; 1 do. 23/6. STORE SHEEP The entries were smaller than usual. The following were among the prices realised : 100 shorn ewe lambs, healthy lin6 (p) 18/-; 169 2-th wethers, medium size, an, even line (p) 21/-; 81 mixed sex lambs, woolly, 15/-; 372 2-th wethers, a good average line 21/-; 133 2-th ewes, offered on aecoutft of W, W.
Smith, off laigh country, a. good line, 29/- ; 86 fat and forward wethers, good, 24/5'd ; 115 do. 23/-; 176, 4,6, and 8-th ewes, on* account W. ' W. Smith, good boned, strong wool, 28/-; 61, mostly wether lambs, shorn, medium sorts, 14/3; 100 mixed aged ewes, froin 4-tb upwards, good condition, (p) 23/-; 33 Southdown cross, fat (p) 19/-; 136 Homney ewe lambs, medium (p) 16/1 ; 113 wether lambs, good 12/9; 66 2-th wethers, 19/-; 190 2-th wethers, wellgrown, in good order, store condition, 22/11; 86, 4, 6, and 8-th ewes irom Wharekopae (p) 24/3; 113 wether lambs sold on account of R. D. Dyniock, Puha, with condition, 15/-.
