NEW MAIN HIGHWAYS
H.B. County's Application A large number of roads which are being largely used by the public are to be shortly submitted by th£ Hawke 's Bay County Council to the District Highways Council for recommendation to be declared main highways. The roads decided upon by the council to-day include the following: — Mill road, to the Te Awanga road; School road, to Black bridge at Clive; Raukawa, Puketapu, Taradale, Meeanee to Awatoto; Middle road; Joylands; Waimarama bathing sheds; Puketapu to Omahu aeross the swamp Mr Lissen said he would like to include the road along the showgrounds to Tomana, but felt'that unless the council' conoentrated on the most important Toads they woald only get the small ones granted. He instanced the case of the Education Board, which, in making applications for sehools, usually got only the small ones granted, the larger ones being usually held over. Mr W. Tucker, who represents the council on the District Highways Council was interested only in the merits of the roads applied for. It did not take into account the number of applications. Mr C. C. Smith said that in his opinion roads used most by the ratepayers should be made the highways. The ehairman, Mr F. B. Logan, said that Mr Tucker would explain to tho Highways Council why the .various roads were put in. It was finally decided that all the roads named be included in the applications to be made.
