CREMATORIUM PLAN
Move for Establishment in Hastings PREJUDICE OVERCOME In common with the move made in the Tna.in centres in New Zealand, an effort is to be made to establish a crematorium in Hastings. Cremation is becoming mor© widely adopted, and it is felt by a section of the community that the time is opportune to give the matter attention in this district. The prejudice against cremation which has been chiefly due to superstition and misunderstanding], has now. to a great extent, been overcome and is now being favoured by many of the churehes. Cremation is by no means a new method of disposing of the dead, as in the early Ohristian days it was generally practised in Rome until the funeral pyre became to costly owing to the extravagance that was shown by the wealthy classes. Of late many of the public cemeteries have become a heavy charge on rates. The position has found to become progressivoly worse as cemeteries are closed. The adoption of cremation would obviate the distres&ing sight of derelict cemeteries due to the neglect in ealing for the graves. A further feature is that the sanctity of the dead is in no way violated by cremation. It is understood that the question is shortly to be brougfht before the Hastings Borough Council.
